The EZ-3 USX HD has the stability, comfort, and control of a recumbent trike. Starting in 2009 the Sun EZ USX became the Sun EZ USX HD. HD is for heavy duty, this trike is warranted for riders up to 400 lb.
Sun EZ-3 USX Recumbent Tricycle
The USX HD is the least expensive delta trike with Under Seat Steering (USS). Some riders find the under-the-seat steering offers a more relaxing arm position. The only way to know if you like USS is to try a trike with USS and OSS (Over Seat Steering). The USX can be adjusted to fit riders from about 5’ to about 6’3”. Its 21 speeds allow most riders to (slowly) climb most paved hills. Several of our customers just love their USX trikes, but they don’t typically ride over 10-20 miles a day and certainly don’t race.
The USX, like the EZ-3 AX, has a lower seat than the Sun EZ Tri Classic, and the rear wheels are cambered giving a low center of gravity to increase stability when cornering. Three 20-inch wheels mean only one size tire and tube so you can get matching replacements easily. Its three-wheel brakes stop this trike well.
The EZ-3 USX is too heavy for an enthusiast and not stable enough for the daredevil, who may tip one over. The EZ-3 USX is for casual riders, perfect for sunny days on the bike path and tooling around the neighborhood running errands while getting in shape.
The USX frame has a hinge in the middle with a spring on it. This feature makes it foldable and gives some suspension.
As a folding trike, it is poor, it does not fold quickly or get very small. Tools are required to fold it and it does not fold up small enough to fit into the trunk or back seat of a mid-sized sedan. It is the least foldable of the foldable trikes. Want easy folding? See the Greenspeed GT3 or Ice trikes. They fold more easily, get smaller and are much lighter to lift. They also cost 3 to 4 times as much as the EZ-3 USX HD.
The USX has a spring suspension, but the suspension does not do much to absorb bumps, especially for taller riders who sit right over the rear wheels. Looking for a suspended (with suspension) trike? Check out the Ice, HP Velotechnik or Catrike trikes. They have much better suspension and are lighter but cost 3 to 4 times as much as the USX HD.
I have been pretty critical of the Sun USX here, I just want to point out three things:
- It is in no way a performance trike.
- Its suspension doesn’t do much to absorb bumps
- Its folding feature is more or less useless.
The USX HD is a rugged, comfy, fun and relaxing trike that is easy to get used to. As I said previously, several of our customers just love their USX trikes, but they don’t typically ride over 10-20 miles a day and certainly don’t race. Try one and see if it is the trike for you!
