Catrike Speed Recumbent Trike

The Catrike Speed was discontinued in 2011. If you are looking for a really fast Catrike, check out the Catrike 700!

We don’t have any Speeds left, this page remains as historical information.

Catrike Speed

The Catrike Speed began as the high-performance trike in the growing Catrike line-up. Things went along just fine till the 700 came out and set a new standard for moderate price and immoderate speed. This left the Speed with somewhat of an identity crisis, who was it for? Not the racer or serious gear head…

The Catrike Speed Tadpole Trike

Not to worry, Paulo has intervened and given the Speed a new identity to fit a slightly different, less radical rider. The 2008 Catrike Speed has less recline than the 700 for a more comfort oriented rider. At 30 lb it’s a bit lighter than the 700 too. The Speed was always a smaller trike than the 700 and it retains the portability advantage. It is a few hundred less expensive too. Still the lightest and one of the fastest trikes in its price range, it is sandwiched between the Catrike Road (three readily available 20” (406) wheels, ¾” more ground clearance, 3 lb heavier, $200 less) and the Expedition (similar speed, 2” more ground clearance, $200 more.) The 2008 Speed ahs a 20” (406) rear wheel so lots of tires will be readily available there.

So, what’s not to like? It isn’t the ultimate speed machine yet has only 2.25” of ground clearance, maybe a bit low for some conditions encountered commuting or on rough gravel roads. The 16” (349) tires are a bit hard to find but bent savvy shops will have them.
